#13 - Scott Balmos

I started playing football at the age of 4 in San Antonio, TX.  My Dad was my first coach. I grew up playing multiple positions, but spent the most time as a center back (sweeper) and goalkeeper. One of many lessons I've learned is that I need to spend more time preparing physically for matches in order to perform at the highest level. Proper warm-up, stretching, etc. are a must.

My Story

I started playing football at the age of 4 in San Antonio, TX.  My Dad was my first coach. I grew up playing multiple positions, but spent the most time as a center back (sweeper) and goalkeeper. One of many lessons I've learned is that I need to spend more time preparing physically for matches in order to perform at the highest level. Proper warm-up, stretching, etc., are a must. It's an incredible honor to represent the US at the national level. Words can't describe what it means to me as a Marine Corps veteran. It goes without saying that everything we do as players on the USMSNT reflects upon our country and the program.  This goes for our actions on and off the field.  Mentally, my mind still believes I'm 25, but my body tells me otherwise.  We have to listen to our bodies and train smarter, more consistently, and differently than we did as younger athletes.  Work on our flexibility, work on our core, and make the adjustments to our diet and recovery times to stay match-ready. This group is vastly different from the club teams I play with.  The level of commitment, dedication, fitness, and dedication to the game we all love is apparent.  This isn't about showing up on a weekend for a game or for a tournament and just giving our best.  It's a year-long, lifestyle commitment and sacrifice to play at the national level. Legacy to me means that we're building a program that is here for the long term.  The program will survive and live beyond the current coaches and players.  I love the vision and goal of our coaching staff to create something older elite athletes can strive for in the future.  Make the changes to your lifestyle and individual training methods to perform at an elite level post 40.  There are many talented footballers in the US under 25.  Only a small group of players keep their fitness and skill levels where they need to be to compete at a higher level.
