David Schill

’ve been playing soccer since I was 4 years old. I moved around a lot as a kid, and every time I moved, I had to make new friends. Soccer was how I made new friends with each move, and many of those friendships have lasted decades. I’ve played every position in soccer! I mainly played center midfielder growing up, and as I transitioned to college soccer at the Air Force Academy, I transitioned to center defense. I also played forward at the Academy after we lost a couple taof lented players to injuries and transfers, and that experience broadened my awareness of the game.

My Story

’ve been playing soccer since I was 4 years old. I moved around a lot as a kid, and every time I moved, I had to make new friends. Soccer was how I made new friends with each move, and many of those friendships have lasted decades. I’ve played every position in soccer! I mainly played center midfielder growing up, and as I transitioned to college soccer at the Air Force Academy, I transitioned to center defense. I also played forward at the Academy after we lost a couple taof lented players to injuries and transfers, and that experience broadened my awareness of the game.  A soccer game is defined by a handful of moments. Everything we do in training, in game prep, and during the game is in preparation for those moments and ensuring they turn out in our favor. The United States is an amazing, diverse country with so much opportunity. When I represent the United States, I wear the uniform with pride and with gratitude for the great nation we live in. There is a certain honor that comes with wearing the USMSNT crest, as it signifies a commitment to the heritage and legacy of those who have played before us and will play after us. As individuals, we are responsible to uphold the traditions and principles associated with the USMSNT, which include loyalty, pride, and a commitment to hard work and excellence. Soccer training does not occur overnight. You can’t just show up to a game and compete at the highest levels. My non-soccer training involves strength and cardiovascular fitness. These sessions ensure I am building strength, flexibility, and endurance into my muscles so they are ready for competition. And of course I play lots of soccer. Sometimes I train by myself or with a friend, and those sessions are spent working on ball control and technique. I’ll also play small-sided and full field games, and those are for working on game speed and decision-making.
