USA Over-50 Begins Road to 2027 World Masters Games in Japan
National program begins comprehensive preparation for major international competition in Kansai, Japan
The USA Men’s Over-50 Senior National Team has officially begun preparations for one of the most significant events on its 2027 international calendar — the World Masters Games Kansai in Japan.
Scheduled for May 2027, the World Masters Games will bring thousands of experienced athletes from around the world to Japan for an extensive program of international competition. For the USA O50 program, the event represents far more than another tournament. It is a major competitive objective and an important milestone in the continued development of a structured international pathway for senior American soccer players.
With the road to Japan now underway, the months ahead will focus on identifying players from across the United States, building a competitive national player pool and ultimately selecting a squad prepared to represent the country on the international stage.
Building the National Player Pool
Under Head Coach Jose Pires, the Men’s O50 national player pool will be developed throughout the 2026–27 cycle through a combination of Player ID Events, competitive tournament evaluations and final selection opportunities.
The nationwide process is designed to provide accomplished players from different regions and playing backgrounds with an opportunity to demonstrate that they have the ability to compete within a national-team environment.
Selection will be performance-based.
Players will be evaluated on technical ability, tactical understanding, positional awareness, physical preparation, competitive experience, professionalism and their ability to contribute within the standards and culture being established for the national program.
Rather than relying on a single tryout, the pathway gives the coaching staff opportunities to evaluate players across multiple environments before making final international selections.
From Identification to International Competition
The pathway toward Japan will progress through several important stages.
Players first enter the national player pool through designated Player ID opportunities. Competitive tournaments provide additional opportunities for evaluation under match conditions before leading candidates progress toward final selection.
From there, the focus shifts from identifying individual players to developing a cohesive national team.
Training, tactical preparation, player combinations, team culture and international readiness will all become increasingly important as the final squad takes shape.
For the players pursuing selection, every stage represents another opportunity to demonstrate that they are prepared for the demands of international competition.

The World Masters Games will also mark the beginning of an extraordinary period of international competition for the Senior Legacy Program.
Following Japan, attention will turn toward the 2027 Senior World Cup in Thailand, placing two significant international competitions within the program’s broader 2027 calendar.
The proximity of those events creates a unique opportunity to demonstrate the depth and quality of the American senior player pool while continuing to establish the program internationally.
The experience gained throughout the selection and preparation process will also contribute to the long-term development of the Men’s O50 program beyond a single tournament.
Preparing for More Than the Match
Taking a national squad overseas requires preparation that extends far beyond selecting players and developing tactics.
Program leadership is working through the extensive logistical requirements associated with international competition, including accommodation, ground transportation, training facilities, field access, player services, equipment, medical and performance support, staff travel and team operations.
International documentation, entry requirements, scheduling and other travel considerations must also be coordinated well in advance.
Each element contributes to creating an environment that allows selected players to arrive in Japan prepared to focus on competition.
